Camera spy, camera hidden, camera covert devices are very small, they have to be to make them very difficult for those being spied on to detect. They are often hidden in or disguised as a range of everyday items and may work off local power or small batteries. They can transmit via cables or an unobtrusive wireless link which enables them to be installed anywhere without attracting attention.

Covert spy cameras are increasingly being used throughout the world to protect homes and businesses and ensure peace of mind. These hidden cameras will become more and more common with the constant increase in crime and deception and the uncertain future that we all face.

Many of us feel somewhat uncomfortable about using covert cameras for surveillance purposes and feel guilty about our mistrust of others. This discomfort and guilt can often delay our decision making and allow situations to worsen considerably before action is taken.

Secret surveillance necessitates the use of hidden cameras which are often in the form of miniature pinhole cameras fitted inside everyday items where they are invisible to those you want to observe. These cameras can be battery powered (typically a 9volt PP3 battery), and fitted with a small wireless transmitter which has a typical transmission distance of 100m (unobstructed) and around 30m installed inside a building (i.e. through walls).

There are several points that should be decided on before purchasing a camera:

What light conditions will be encountered and will they vary?
Do you want black and white or colour images? Note: black and white cameras will operate in lower light situations than colour.
Will the camera be static or mobile?
Is sound required in addition to video?
Can a small camera be hidden in a position that will actually view the required area, or could the subject easily move out of the field of view?
If above is not possible, would the introduction of an everyday item (fitted with the camera, battery and transmitter) arouse suspicion. It may even be possible to conceal them in an existing item.
If external power is required, can wires be concealed?
How do you propose to view or record the scenes from the spy/hidden camera:
Feed the output from the hidden camera by cable to a monitor and or video recorder in another room
Feed the output from the spy camera to a video transmitter that then transmits to a remote receiver and monitor and or recorder.
If a video recorder is to be used, will it be on continuously (if so, how long will it need to record before tape change is required), or will it be triggered to record only when movement is detected?

Like most things in life, with spy cameras you get what you pay for. Cameras fitted with CCD as opposed to CMOS devices, generally give a higher quality picture, but are normally higher price. Camera quality needs to be matched to what you are aiming to achieve.
