Stun Guns

Stun guns are small, easy to use very effective self defense devices, but unfortunately are not legal in some parts of the world (please see notes below and check).

Stun Guns - Compact Protection

Where there use is allowed, they are great devices to keep with you at all times: walking, jogging, travelling, camping, shopping etc. They are small enough to fit in a pocket, handbag, purse or clip round your belt, ready for whenever you may need them. Some are even disguised as a cell phone.

How Do They Work?

Stun guns are used to generate a high-voltage, low amperage electrical charge. When the gun is pressed against an attackers body and the trigger is squeezed, the charge passes into their body. Due to the fairly high voltage the charge is able to pass through heavy clothing and skin. Unless applied for extended periods of time, the charge is not powerful enough (around 3 milliamps) to damage the attackers body. Even if the attacker touches you, this current will not pass to your body.

Most stun guns work off standard 9 volt batteries, (the higher output devices may use two or three of these batteries) the output of these batteries is passed through multiple transformers where the voltage is increased to between 20,000 and 500,000 volts and the amperage is reduced. The internal circuitry also includes an oscillator that fluctuates the current output to produce specific pulse patterns of electricity. This output is fed via a capacitor to the electrodes (two plates of conducting metal with a gap between them). If this gap is closed by the attackers body and the trigger is squeezed, the elctrical pulses will try to move from one electrode to the other, passing into his body and nervous system and incapacitating him.

Liquid Stun Gun

A later variation on the standard stun gun where the electrodes have been replaced by a stream of liquid (to conduct the electricity). These devices do require a supply of liquid which is typically comprised of water mixed with salt and other conductive elements.

The guns have a longer range than a taser and can be fired many times in quick succession.

Their drawback is: having to carry around the conductive liquid supply, typically a water tank backpack. Alternatively they can work with vehicle mounted water cannons - hardly self defense weapons for the average person

Restrictions on Use

Stun Guns are restricted in many parts of the world including:

Hawaii

Massachusetts

Michigan

Jersey

New York

Rhode Island

Wisconsin

As well as a number of Cities and countries including:

Australia

Belgium

Canada

Denmark

Hong Kong

India (police only)

Italy

New Zealand

Norway

Sweden

Switzerland

United Kingdom

Please check current restrictions before purchase

REMEMBER

The effect of a stun gun or taser charge may vary to some extent from one person to another.

Stun guns and tasers generally need 3-5 seconds of contact (some manufacturers claim immediate takedown for their more advanced models), to be effective - what is the assailant going to be doing during this time? More than likely he is going to fight back and may in fact grab the stun device and zap you before he becomes paralysed.
